One of its main characteristics is that it is a colorless liquid and that it is aprotic, that is, it is a type of solvent that does not give or accept protons. <strong>DMSO<\/strong> is an organic liquid with rapid penetration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the characteristics of DMSO?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>DMSO has several factors that help it distinguish itself from other chemical compounds that may be similar to it or have a similar function or even use. Therefore, DMSO is distinguished by the following points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Its chemical formula is <strong>(CH\u2083) 2SO<\/strong> . Its molecule has a pyramidal shape with atoms of sulfur, oxygen, carbon and hydrogen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9693 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cdslab.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/C2H6OS-300x245.png\" alt=\"DMSO formula\" width=\"120\" height=\"98\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cdslab.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/C2H6OS-300x245.png 300w, https:\/\/www.cdslab.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/C2H6OS-150x122.png 150w, https:\/\/www.cdslab.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/C2H6OS.png 408w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 120px) 100vw, 120px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>DMSO<\/strong> is characterized by being an organic liquid soluble in water and miscible with ethanol, acetone, benzene and numerous organic solvents with the exception of some hydrocarbons.<\/li>\n<li>It is a clear, colorless and odorless liquid.<\/li>\n<li>Solidification point: below 18 \u00b0 C. Melting point: 18 \u00b0 C. Flash point: 95 \u00b0 C. Boiling point: 189 \u00b0 C. Auto-ignition temperature: 270 \u00b0 C.<\/li>\n<li><strong>DMSO<\/strong> can be absorbed through skin <strong>penetration<\/strong> , <strong>ingestion<\/strong> or even <strong>inhalation<\/strong> of the aerosol.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What are the main uses of DMSO?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Due to its characteristics, <strong>DMSO<\/strong> is used for various purposes. Among many others we find it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As <strong>a solvent<\/strong> : DMSO is often used as <strong>a solvent<\/strong> for <strong>chemical reactions<\/strong> involving salts. It is also used as an <strong>extractant in biochemistry<\/strong> Y <strong>cell biology<\/strong> . Additionally, DMSO is increasingly being used in manufacturing processes to produce <strong>microelectronic devices<\/strong> . Another of its areas of use is <strong>bio<\/strong> -preservation, especially in stem cell banks. Finally, DMSO is an <strong>effective paint stripper<\/strong> , being safer than many others, such as nitromethane (CH\u2083NO\u2082) and dichloromethane (CH <sub>2<\/sub> Cl <sub>2<\/sub> ).<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>veterinary field:<\/strong> <strong>DMSO<\/strong> is commonly used in veterinary medicine as <strong>horse liniment<\/strong> for the treatment of increased intracranial pressure and \/ or cerebral edema. It can be <strong>used alone or with other ingredients<\/strong> customizing the intended function of DMSO is that of a solvent, to transport the other ingredients through the skin.<\/li>\n<li>In the field of <strong>biology:<\/strong> <strong>DMSO<\/strong> is used in <strong>polymerase chain reaction (PCR)<\/strong> to inhibit secondary structures in the DNA template or DNA primers. It is added to the PCR mix before reacting. DMSO can also be used as a <strong>cryoprotective<\/strong> , added to cell support to reduce ice formation and thus prevent cell death during the freezing process. Finally, in cell culture, DMSO is <strong>used to induce cell differentiation<\/strong> of P19 embryonic carcinoma into cardiomyocytes and skeletal muscle cells.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is DMSO?
